Two Hints on the Face That Could Be a Sign of High Cholesterol

High cholesterol can make it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — High cholesterol is a dangerous condition because it increases the risk heart disease without giving any clear signs. However, some people may find two visual clues that may appear on their faces.

Cholesterol (a waxy substance found in the blood) is needed to build healthy cells. However, high cholesterol can make it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries. This is the beginning of heart disease.

Although this process often goes undetected, some people may experience symptoms. For example, yellow bumps (also known as xanthelasma) can appear around the eyes or nose made of cholesterol deposits.

“In some people, it’s a sign that you have a cholesterol high,” said a dermatologist at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Dearborn, Michigan, Daveluy ExpressWednesday (11/5/2022).

Speaking to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), doctors said having lumps is a sign you should have your cholesterol checked. How to get rid of xanthelasma? Menurut American Academy of Ophthalmology, xanthelasma doesn’t go away on its own.

“They tend to stay the same size or grow larger. While generally harmless, you may want to remove them for aesthetic reasons,” says the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Xanthelasma can be treated by removing excess, such as extreme cold or freezing surgery (called cryotherapy), laser surgery, traditional surgery to remove and repair skin, extreme heat (electrical needle) surgery, and chemical peels.

You can lower cholesterol by making lifestyle changes and taking medication. The latter is usually recommended if the former fails to produce results.

According to the NHS, to reduce cholesterol, try cutting back on fatty foods, especially foods that contain a type of fat called saturated fat. Saturated fat can be found in meat pies, sausages, and fatty meats.

“You can still eat foods that contain healthy fat so-called unsaturated fats,” the NHS wrote.

Try to eat more foods such as oily fish (such as mackerel and salmon), brown rice, breads and pastas, nuts and seeds, fruits, and vegetables.

Exercise can also have an impact on high cholesterol. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) explains, pumping blood by doing exercise will reduce your cholesterol. According to BHF, being active helps the body move bad cholesterol to the liver, where it can be removed from the body’s system.

“You don’t have to join gym or long-distance running if you’re not enjoying it, just look for opportunities to move more each day,” wrote BHF.

You can also try, for example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking fast instead of slow walking, jumping jack for two minutes several times a day, and yoga or pilates if you can’t get out.
