Two kinds of ‘gopchang seaweed’ distributed in the market were judged unsuitable for artificial sweeteners.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 28th that artificial sweeteners were detected in excess of the standard in ‘gopchang stone seaweed’ of Malsun Food manufactured in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
The expiration date of the products subject to recall is until January 30, 2024.
In addition, it was confirmed that artificial sweeteners were illegally used in ‘Gopchang Traditional Laver’ manufactured by Solmoe F&C located in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do.
Saccharin sodium, an artificial sweetener, was detected in traditional giblet seaweed packaged and sold by Solmoe FNC. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is in the process of suspending sales and recalling them. The expiration date of the products subject to recall is until November 15, 2023.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety asked consumers who purchased the product to stop eating and return it to the place of purchase.
Artificial sweeteners are chemical compounds used to produce sweetness instead of sugar, and are generally hundreds of times stronger than sugar. Most of them are known to be low-calorie or non-calorie, as they are often non-nutritive.
Previously, on the 26th, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety detected a preservative in excess of the standard in burdock (salted burdock) cooked for gimbap, so it stopped selling and recalled it. It was confirmed that the preservative (ethyl paraoxybenzoate) in seaweed burdock produced by Daechang Nongsan located in Yeongi-myeon, Sejong City did not meet the standard.
