(ANSA) – PALERMO, NOV 14 – The technicians of the Sicilian Alpine and Speleological Rescue intervened in San Vito Lo Capo (Trapani) with a long and complex night-time operation to rescue two mountaineers who were stuck on the wall at Monte Monaco. The women, of German nationality, aged 34 and 43 respectively, were climbing on the “Fratelli Titt” route, which has a length of 620 meters on the eastern spur of the mountain. After reaching the top they were rappelling when, about 200 meters from the ground, the ropes got stuck between the rocks leaving them “hanging”, with no possibility of continuing or climbing back up. Also worried about the onset of darkness and the drop in temperatures, with their cell phones they managed to raise the alarm, via the owner of the B&B where they were staying, to a local Alpine Rescue technician who, in turn, alerted their colleagues of Palermo. Thus the recovery operation began with two teams of technicians who, having arrived at the base of the mountain, climbed the wall, reached the two women and helped them to descend safely. The Carabinieri from the San Vito Lo Capo station collaborated in the operations. Last year a similar operation was also carried out in Monte Monaco for four Polish climbers who were stuck about 200 meters from the ground. (HANDLE).
