Two ethnic Greeks were killed in a shooting at Ukrainian servicemen and two others were injured, according to the online edition of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, citing information from the Greek Foreign Ministry. The incident took place in the area of the village of Granida in eastern Ukraine, BTA reports.
According to the information so far, three servicemen from the Ukrainian army are responsible for the deaths of the ethnic Greeks. The two groups quarreled, the reason being insignificant.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias has asked to hold a telephone conversation with Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba to stress the need to protect the Greek community in Ukraine.
In the area of the city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine lives a Greek community of 120,000 people.
Earlier today, the Greek Foreign Ministry called on Greek citizens in Ukraine to leave the country “immediately”. The recommendations to the Greeks there are to contact the Greek embassy in Kiev, and the planned trips to Ukraine should be canceled.
Greece has reduced the composition of its diplomatic mission in the Ukrainian capital and reassigned staff to the Greek Consulate General in Mariupol.
