At 2147, the emergency services received a message from someone standing on shore who had observed two people in a canoe who then appeared to be in trouble. They must have observed that the persons were not wearing life jackets.
They are said to have been between Garnestangen and Haus i Arna.
The police and the fire service participated in a rescue operation led by the Central Rescue Centre.
The fire service sent out a boat from Knarvik and crews from Arna station with surface rescuers, according to duty commander at the 110 central Shahrooz Lahooti.
Will be reported
The operation revealed that the two in the canoes had not directly had any problems, but the police still do not take kindly to what had been going on in the boat.
In it sat two drunken men in their 60s, says operations manager Knut Dahl-Michelsen.
– They were not able to be at sea. Nor did they have life jackets on or with them.
The men are reported for this.
When the police came into contact with the men, they were approximately fifty meters from shore, says the operations manager.
– They launched a major rescue operation, but they are not reported for it, he adds.
BA corrects: We first quoted the rescue manager at the main rescue center that “everything was in perfect order” in the canoe, in the sense that the people were wearing life jackets. This is not true, and the men are reported for not having brought vests. The error was corrected at 2246 on 19.08.2023.
