The case is up to date.
A rescue operation was carried out on Saturday night at Møsvatn a Vinje in Vestfold and Telemark.
Two people died after the snowmobiles they were driving crossed the ice of Lake Møsvatn.
– It’s just very tragic, very sad. My deepest condolences to the relatives, Vinje Mayor Jon Rikard Kleven told VG.
Local connection
Police received a message from AMK headquarters at 01:37 and moved in with HRS assets, a helicopter ambulance and cushion ships.
The deceased were found, but their lives could not be saved. A man in his 50s and a man in his 60s were pronounced dead at the scene at 3:05am.
The deceased have local connections, according to police.
Police view the incident as a tragic accident, they wrote on Twitter.
– They had gone out driving their scooters. That’s the leading theory, Southeastern Police District operations manager Roger Aaser tells VG.
The next of kin have been notified.
Known conditions
– There are two people who have very good knowledge about Mjøsvatn and the local conditions. They’re used to traveling to the areas year-round, says Mayor Jon Rikard Kleven.
The mayor adds that it was an unusually mild November.
– This shows that it can now be very dangerous with unsafe ice. It’s important here to listen to the good advice of those in the know, says Kleven.
The police still do not have a full view of the course of events.
– We now have a patrol arriving in the area to investigate the site in daylight, says director of operations Aaser.
There were no witnesses to the crash, according to police. The police were informed by AMK headquarters, which had received a concern report.
The crisis team has been notified. A debriefing will also be conducted with those involved in the rescue operation.
A crisis team has been set up in the municipality for people who need someone to talk to.
