Two deaths and 89 positive cases due to COVID-19 added, totaling 3,486 infections in Puerto Rico

After three consecutive days without deaths from COVID-19, the Health Department added this Thursday two deaths associated with the disease totaling 131, while the only positive cases increased to 3,486 with 89 new infections.

The agency reported that the most recent fatalities from the virus are a 92-year-old man from the Metro region and another 76-year-old man residing in the Mayagüez region. The death of both was reported through the Demographic Registry.

“With the added fatalities, the total number of deaths registered through the Surveillance System remains at 61 and those reported through the Demographic Registry add up to 70,” the agency said in a press release.

The Health report does not include death of a 27-year-old girl who passed away yesterday, Wednesday, because of the virus. The information was confirmed by the president of the College of Physicians, Víctor Ramos, who specified that she remained in a coma for several weeks.

“It is important to remember that any death recorded after the report is issued will be reflected in subsequent reports,” Salud said in his statement.

On the other hand, the agency detailed that of the 89 new cases, 20 were processed through molecular tests and 69 by serological tests. Given this, the positive results through serological tests are increasing with 2,206 and the positive ones detected with molecular tests add up to 1,280. Of this universe of cases, 1,757 correspond to women and 1,729 to men.

The total number of COVID-19 tests carried out on the island is unknown, as well as the number of patients who have overcome the disease.

Meanwhile, the number of patients hospitalized by the virus rose to 120, which translates to 15 more than yesterday. Of that total, 12 are being held in an Intensive Care Unit and five are connected to an artificial respirator. To date, hospitals have 3,005 beds and 872 artificial respirators available for adults.

San Juan remains the municipality with the highest incidence of the disease with 493 cases, followed by Bayamón (216), Guaynabo (184) and Carolina (143). Culebra remains the only one with no reported cases of the virus for more than two months after the emergency.

Cases within the age group of 50 to 59 years continue to increase with 723, thus being the most affected since the start of the pandemic. It is followed by 40 to 49 years old (623) and 30 to 39 years old (547).
