Three people were reportedly trapped at the time fire happened at a materials shop on Jalan Siliwangi, Cianjur, West Java. Two people have now been found dead.
The two victims were found after firefighters, BPBD and PMI Cianjur broke through the back wall of the materials shop. The wall that was breached was directly opposite the prayer room where it is thought the victims were trapped.
“There were two points that we broke through with a jackhammer. At the second point we managed to find access to the prayer room,” said PMI Cianjur Regency Chairman Ahmad Fikri, Wednesday (17/1/2024).
According to Fikri, firefighters took turns entering the prayer room to look for victims. At around 02.00 WIB the first male victim was found.
The second female victim was found at 02.20 WIB. The evacuation process took 10 hours.
“After 10 hours of handling the fire and searching efforts, two victims were finally found. We immediately evacuated the two victims. After being released, they were immediately taken by ambulance to the morgue at Sayang Cianjur Regional Hospital,” he said.
Cianjur Police Chief AKBP Aszhari Kurniawan said it was suspected there was another victim in the building. However, joint officers have not been able to find him.
“The whereabouts of another victim are still unknown. Further searching is also not possible because there are still flames and lack of lighting. We will continue this morning,” he said.
For the two victims who have been evacuated, he continued, identification will be carried out to confirm their identities.
“The Cianjur Police identification team has been alerted at the Sayang District Hospital. We will first confirm the gender and identity of the deceased victim,” he said.
The police are still investigating the material shop fire case. Initial investigations suggest the fire was caused by welding activity.
“Temporary information is due to welding activities, where sparks were exposed to flammable materials. But we will confirm this through scientific investigation,” he said.
Reported detikjabar, a materials shop on Jalan Siliwangi, Cianjur District, Cianjur Regency, caught fire on Tuesday (16/1) at around 16.15 WIB. Three shop employees are known to have been trapped when the fire broke out.
