The two bodies were found by a passer-by in the night from Thursday to Friday. “At 3 am, the police received a report that an ambulance had arrived at the Koningin Astridplein, at the underground bicycle shed, because two bodies had been found,” Mayor De Wever told ATV.
“Unfortunately, those turned out to be the lifeless bodies of possibly homeless people,” explains De Wever. A judicial investigation will be conducted into the cause of death. “A toxicological cause is not excluded,” the mayor said.
“Given the location and the fact that it concerns two relatively young men, the deaths are considered suspicious,” the Antwerp police said. The ongoing investigation has already shown that there is no question of malicious intent, the police said.
It may be hypothermia in combination with too much alcohol. The underground car park at Antwerp Central Station is a place where homeless people often come to shelter at night.
