Two dead and three injured after car crashes into cycling tourists, driver takes positive breath test

A motorist crashed into five cycling tourists in the port of Ghent on Sunday. The toll is dramatic. Two cyclists died on the spot, three others were injured.

The accident happened on Sunday at 11 am in the Pantserschipstraat in the port of Ghent. The driver of an Opel Astra allegedly first drove onto the sidewalk at the bus stop, after which the car swerved to the other side of the road and hit the cycling tourists there. He eventually ended up against the fence of the Eastman company.

The toll is very heavy: two cyclists did not survive the collision with the passenger car. These are two 45-year-old men. Three other cyclists were injured. One of them is seriously injured, but his life is not in danger. The two others were not seriously injured and can already be questioned.

Dangerous traffic situation

The 45-year-old driver of the car gave a positive breath test. He was arrested and will be brought before the investigating judge. The public prosecutor’s office has appointed a traffic expert to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

Some employees of Eastman, the company located right next to the accident site, are complaining about the dangerous traffic situation. “They are playing with our lives here,” they say. “You can drive 50 kilometers per hour here, but hardly anyone adheres to that. There is a zebra crossing, but you always have to be extra careful when crossing.”
