Two Cubans from Florida arrested in Texas accused of illegally bringing two illegal immigrants from Mexico into the US

On the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety Texas, shared details about the case and the reasons for the arrest.

According to Olivarez, agents stopped a Chevrolet Malibu on US-277 in Kinney County, Texas, and discovered an illegal operation.

Why were Cubans arrested in Texas?

Olivarez said one of the Cubans on board the vehicle had a pending hearing to obtain U.S. citizenship. Both individuals were arrested as part of Operation Lone Star.

The driver, Diojany Carrillo Rodriguez, a Florida resident, and the passenger, Dariel Ibanez Hernandez, a Cuban with a pending hearing in the United States Court for his citizenship, were involved in the trafficking of two illegal immigrants from Mexico, according to the spokesman.

Rodriguez said he had a Houston address on his GPS and picked up the undocumented immigrants in Eagle Pass after they asked him for a ride. However, both men were charged with human smuggling. The undocumented immigrants who were in the vehicle were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Operation Lone Star

The Office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the controversial Operation Lone Star was launched in 2021, deploying the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to the southern border.

“Operation Lone Star personnel are working around the clock to detect and prevent illegal crossings, arrest human traffickers and cartel gang members, and stop the flow of lethal drugs, like fentanyl, into our nation,” Abbott said. The governor also blamed the Biden administration for its “reckless open border policies,” which he said have led to an ongoing crisis at the southern border.

Immigrants and border policies

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s strict border policies have found support among some Hispanic immigrants. As part of his campaign, Trump has promised to carry out the largest deportation of undocumented immigrants in U.S. history.

On the other hand, the Biden Administration has promoted safe and orderly pathways for immigration to the US, implementing policies such as the humanitarian parole program, which benefits citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
