Two cruise passengers killed in quarantine in Japan

These are the first fatalities among more than 600 people infected with Covid-19 on the ship Princess Princess, which brings to three the number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus in the country.

These two octogenarians, a woman and a man, had some health problems and were removed from the boat on February 11 and 12, said a Ministry source and the Japanese public television station NHK.

On Wednesday night, Tokyo announced 79 more confirmed cases on board, bringing the total number of Diamond Princess infected to 621 people. The cruise, anchored in the port of Yokohama, south of Tokyo, is Covid-19’s biggest focus outside mainland China.

Also on Wednesday, Japanese authorities began the unloading operation for healthy passengers, ending the vessel’s quarantine period, which started on February 3. This operation is expected to end on Friday.

People who did not show symptoms, with negative analyzes and without contact with infected people disembarked during the day, after 14 days of quarantine.

The death toll from the new coronavirus rose this Thursday to 2,118 in mainland China, at the same time as the lowest daily increase in new cases of infection in almost a month, from 394. The Health Commission of China indicated that, by midnight (16:00 on Wednesday in Lisbon), 114 people died due to Covid-19. The total number of patients was 74,576. However, the number of new daily cases is the lowest since January 25.
