Two countries protest EU plans to save gas

Two EU countries opposed plans to save gas

Portugal and Spain said they were “categorically against” the EU proposal to reduce gas consumption.

The authorities of Portugal and Spain opposed the plan of the European Union, which called on the countries to reduce their gas consumption by 15%. On Thursday, July 21, reports Spiegel.

For example, Portugal’s Energy Minister Joao Galamba said his country was “categorically opposed” to the disproportionate and unsustainable EU proposal.

According to him, the proposal does not take into account the special hydropower needs of Spain and Portugal. Due to the current drought, both countries are forced to produce more electricity from gas-fired power plants.

In turn, Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera also said that she did not want to dictate to consumers the restriction of gas consumption.

She stated that Spain would not introduce a law dictating the temperature of thermostats in apartments.

Recall the day before The European Commission presented an emergency tea package to ensure energy security after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the bloc that Russian supplies via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline would continue to decline. The EU intends to reduce gas consumption by 15%.
