A knife-wielding man stabbed two NYPD officers Saturday night just outside New Year’s celebrations in Times Square, law enforcement sources told NBC New York.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. on Manhattan’s 8th Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets, about a block from the Times Square perimeter set up for the ball drop festivities.
According to three NYPD sources, the man, who was carrying a large knife, lunged at a group of officers patrolling the street.
One of the officers sustained minor injuries. The second woman in uniform was slightly injured, although it is not known whether her injuries were related to the attack.
At least one officer shot the suspect, hitting him in the shoulder, according to sources. Even his wounds are not life threatening.
Both were taken to hospital in stable condition.
The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, three law enforcement sources told NBC New York.
