While it became clear later, according to what the National Geophysics Committee reported, that two earthquakes hit the sea off Sidon within 10 minutes, the first with a magnitude of 3.5 and the second with a magnitude of 3.6.
The National Disaster and Crisis Coordination Committee and the Disaster Management Unit issued a statement saying: “The National Center of Geophysics, affiliated to the National Council for Scientific Research, reported that on Wednesday evening, February 22, 2023, it recorded two earthquakes that were felt by citizens:
– The first one at 18:43, with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale. Its location was located off the Lebanese coast, 67 km from the Sarafand region.
– The second at 18:58, with a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale. Its location was located off the Lebanese coast, 59 km from the Sarafand region.
He continued, “The National Center of Geophysics is important to clarify that there is no danger of tsunamis in Lebanon as a result of these two tremors.”
In the statement, the committee asked all audio-visual and written media to “exercise caution in transmitting and analyzing information related to earthquakes and not publishing it before verifying its authenticity.”
