Two Civilians Killed in Russian Shelling as Drone Strikes Reported in Moscow

Two people were killed in a shelling incident in eastern Ukraine on August 26, as Russia continued its drone strikes, including in the capital, Moscow. The victims were civilians who died when a shell hit a cafe in the village of Podoli in the Kharkiv region, according to Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov.

Podoli had been occupied by Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 but was retaken by Kyiv in a counteroffensive last September. Russian forces have been attempting to push forward on the front line in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks. The Ukrainian Army has acknowledged that fighting in the area has become more difficult but maintains that it is holding the line.

In Russia, a drone strike was reported in the Moscow region on August 26, leading to the temporary suspension of operations at all three major airports in the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that a drone was destroyed by air defense systems over the Istrinsky district, located 50 kilometers west of the Kremlin. Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo airports suspended flights for a couple of hours in response to the incident.

In the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, air defenses successfully shot down a drone near the village of Kupino, with no reported damage or casualties. These reported aerial strikes in Russia occurred a day after multiple drone attacks were reported in Russian-occupied Crimea and inside Russia.

Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Ukrainian military reported that more than 38 combat clashes took place on the front line on August 26. Russian forces launched three missile strikes and 34 air strikes, as well as firing 34 rockets from salvo systems at Ukrainian troop positions. Ukrainian troops are continuing their offensive operation in the area of the strategic southern city of Melitopol and are entrenched at the achieved boundaries, carrying out countermeasures, according to the General Staff.

In other news, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov expressed confidence that Germany will soon supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles. Reznikov did not specify the expected timeline for the delivery but stated that he did not believe it would take a whole year. Ukraine has been requesting Taurus cruise missiles for some time, but German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been hesitant to provide them due to concerns that they could also reach Russian territory. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that “technical details” still need to be clarified.

Germany has already supplied several weapons systems to Ukraine, including the modern Iris-T air defense system. The situation in Ukraine remains tense as both sides continue to engage in military actions.
