After the partial collapse of a twelve-story apartment building in the US state of Florida, the number of recovered fatalities has risen again. More than 140 people are still missing.
After the partial collapse of a high-rise building in Florida, the bodies of two children were found in the rubble. “We found two more bodies under the rubble,” said Miami Dade district administration chief Daniella Levine Cava on Wednesday. “It is with great regret and real pain that I have to announce that these are two children, aged four and ten.”
The death toll rose to 18. More than 140 people are still missing. It is therefore feared that the death toll will rise sharply.
The twelve-story apartment building Champlain Towers South had partially collapsed in the middle of the night a week ago. Since then, rescue workers have been feverishly looking for missing people in the rubble. The exact cause of the accident is unknown. In 2018, however, an expert report found “major structural damage” to the building.
US President Joe Biden will travel to the scene of the accident this Thursday. The President will visit the city of Surfside north of Miami Beach with his wife Jill to see the extent of the disaster.
