Two Children Rescued from Hot Cars in Upper Austria: A Dangers of Heatwave Chronicle

Chronicle

Two operations on Monday afternoon in Upper Austria showed how quickly the current heat can become life-threatening. In Asten (Linz-Land district) and Marchtrenk (Wels-Land district), small children were trapped in hot cars. A 14-month-old boy had to be taken to the hospital.

The boy’s 33-year-old mother had already strapped her son into the car in the parking lot of a shopping center in Asten and closed the door when the car locked itself. The key was also in the car and thus locked. An ÖAMTC employee was able to open the car and get the boy out. He was taken to a hospital in Linz. The fire brigade and police were also on duty.

The car also locked in Marchtrenk after the mother put her eleven-month-old baby in the car. The key was also in the vehicle, as was the key to the apartment where the second key for the car was. In this case, the fire brigade decided to get the second car key from the apartment.

Child distracted with stuffed animal

Lacking a key to the apartment, firefighters climbed a ladder to the apartment’s second-floor balcony, where the balcony door had tilted. In the meantime, a firefighter kept the little child happy with a stuffed animal – a bear in firefighting gear called “Traumabär Konrad”. The child could be gotten out of the car sweaty, but alive and well.
