In a response to the Lusa agency, and without specifying the places of registration, the DGS speaks of two cases in Portugal in recent months that “refer to individuals from Brazil”.
“The cases were reported in the context of clinical suspicion and in the context of the origin of endemic areas, having already started the appropriate treatment”, guarantees the DGS.
This morning, RTP reported that a case of leprosy was confirmed in Porto. At stake is a patient who contracted the infection in Brazil less than a month ago.
The Lusa agency requested clarification from the Northern Regional Health Administration, which did not provide information. The Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Public Health (INSA) sent it to the DGS.
On Wednesday, Madeira’s health services also reported that an imported case of leprosy originating in Brazil was confirmed in that region.
The note released by the Regional Directorate for Health (DRS) of the Madeira archipelago said that it is an adult woman who has resided in the autonomous region since January 2022.
Island health services clarified that this disease “does not spread easily, so it does not imply isolation” and indicated that the “treatment is very effective and prophylaxis is only recommended in the case of very close and prolonged contact”.
SUPPORT OUR WORK. SUPPORT PROXIMITY JOURNALISM.
At a time when information is more important than ever, support regional and outreach journalism. Access to most VTM news is (still) free, but it is not free, journalism costs money and requires investment. This contribution is a way of directly supporting A Voz de Trás-os-Montes and its journalists. Our counterpart is independent and proximity journalism, but not only. It’s continuing to report despite all the confinement contingencies, without stopping for a single day.
