The city of Arnstein will face hard times in the coming months. After the civil engineering work in Grabenstrasse has progressed and there is only an extraordinarily high amount of groundwater to fight in the area of the Schlegel, one will have reached the intersection of Marktstrasse, Würzburger Strasse and Schweinfurter Strasse by March. But that means the complete closure for all traffic at this point.
In addition, from March 1st, Deutsche Bahn will interrupt the road connection due to the construction of the bridge overpass to Würzburg. This required a complex diversion scenario for the Arnstein city area, which Mayor Fanz-Josef Sauer and Fabian Helmerich from the administration presented.
The basic question for the inner-city area is: “How do you get from Arnstein East to West?” After all, there are commercial establishments and hypermarkets in both parts beyond the core city. The mayor had to reject any hope that a small bypass could be made south of the beneficiary hospital in Marktstrasse, as the civil engineering work here is too extensive.
An unusual idea might offer a certain chance: With the help of a Bundeswehr pontoon bridge over the Wern near the Müller car dealership, a provisional connection could be created. But Helmerich had to dampen expectations here too. The city will continue to aggressively pursue this idea, but the higher-level specialist authorities have high requirements with regard to water and nature conservation. The administration has therefore developed two diversion scenarios, the north bypass and the south bypass, for the core city.
The north bypass
To get east from Arnstein, you have to drive north on Schützenbergstrasse on the farm road. During this period, this path becomes a one-way street to the east. From here you get to Schraudenbacher Straße and finally to the East area. In the opposite direction, it goes back up the Schraudenbacher Straße to Meilenhöhe and the Wetzstein, until you come across the B26a. There the path makes a sharp left curve and then joins Schwebenrieder Straße.
The south bypass
To get from Arnstein to Würzburg, you have to drive south on Sondheimer-Au-Straße on the farm road. This paved path joins the state road to Gramschatz. Another farm road (green) then leads into the valley towards Ölmühlweg. To get to Arnstein-Ost, you can also take the state road 229A via Binsbach and Gänheim. The diversion routes should also be clearly and clearly marked by traffic signs.
The third problem point is the accessibility of Marktstrasse for passenger and delivery traffic. Therefore, the one-way rule for the Schelleck should be reversed and apply to the mountain direction. The entrance to Marktstrasse from Schwebenrieder Strasse remains closed, but the exit remains open. From the confluence of the Schelleck in the Marktstrasse this is shown as oncoming traffic. There are turning options for cars and medium-sized trucks.
The large-scale long-distance and heavy goods traffic is directed by the State Building Authority in Würzburg via alternative routes. One point of criticism that is often mentioned here is the early information for truck drivers. The large sign on the Karlstadter driveway to Saupurzel on the B26 is seen by some long-distance drivers as insufficient.
In the city council meeting, Stefan Münch from the Free Werntalliste addressed the question of escape routes and the conditions for emergency vehicles for the fire brigade. Mayor Sauer assured that this had been agreed with the authorities and representatives of the emergency services. However, there may be time losses due to the diversions. In particular, he promised to keep the population regularly informed throughout the work.
