Two Bulgarian pilots – instructors from the base in Dolna Mitropolia were killed – 2024-09-13 14:00:32


These are the best pilots at the base in Lower Metropolia, the defense minister said

The two officers-pilots of the training-combat airplanewhich crashed at a third airbase Count Ignatievowith died. The crew was from the base in Dolna Mitropolia, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov and Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev announced, quoted by BNR.

A Day of Mourning in the Armed Forces has been announced for tomorrow.

The dead are Major Petko Dimitrov Dimitrov (51) and Senior Lieutenant Vencislav Atanasov Dunkin (28). Both were instructors at the base in Lower Metropolia.

“The deceased major was born in 1973, and the deceased lieutenant – in 1996. They took off at 12:17 p.m., and at 12:30 p.m., during a training flight by a team at 12 base from Dolna Mitropolia, they crashed and died. These are the instructors at the 12th base who train pilots. These are our best pilots at the 12th base in terms of this L-39 aircraft,” said Defense Minister Zapryanov.

The plane was reported to have been refurbished.

“The plane is checked before take off. He took off technically upright. The plane has been renovated, a capital overhaul was carried out,” said the Minister of Defense.

An investigation has been launched.

The commander of the Air Force Gen. Dimitar Petrov explained that it was a routine training flight for which the two pilots had been preparing for months and had flown the plane many times.

The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the families and relatives of the dead pilots.
