BOSTON – The Fenway Bowl and Military Bowl were canceled due to the pandemic when COVID-19 outbreaks in Virginia and Boston College forced them to cancel their postseason plans.
The game scheduled for Wednesday at Fenway Park would pit the Cavaliers against SMU. The Military Bowl, scheduled for today at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, between Boston College (BC) and East Carolina, was canceled due to positive tests for covid-19 from BC.
“This is not the way we wanted this season to come to an end,” said Eagles coach Jeff Hafley. “We just don’t have enough players to play a game safely.”
The Fenway Bowl was supposed to bring a college football postseason game to the centennial home of the Boston Red Sox, but those plans have been thwarted twice by the pandemic. It would be the last game for Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall, who announced his resignation after the Cavaliers concluded a 6-6 regular season.
But before the team’s planned departure on Christmas Day, the players began showing symptoms of covid-19 and tested positive.
Miami ain’t going to your bowl
The University of Miami announced through its social networks that it will not play the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl against Washington State on December 31 due to the increase in covid-19 cases in its staff.
