After years in a too small enclosure in a zoo in Argentina, two Bengal tigers move to a large sanctuary in the USA. 14-year-old Rhiano and 12-year-old Cleo began their journey on Saturday in special transport cages to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, which specializes in rescuing and keeping large predators.
Cleo, the tiger, originally came from a Canadian zoo. Rhiano was born in the Buenos Aires Zoo, which closed a few years ago and turned it into an “eco-park”. Since then, more than 890 animals have been moved to other locations where they have been housed in more modern or more spacious enclosures.
Now Rhiano and Cleo should also get a better “quality of life”, as the park explained. While the old Buenos Aires zoo was only 18 acres, the Colorado facility spans more than 700 acres.
The tigers now have a “long journey” ahead of them, as the Environment Minister of Buenos Aires, Eduardo Machiavelli, said. “First an eleven hour flight to Dallas and then a nine-hour drive to the sanctuary in Colorado.”
