Two Belgian holidaymakers have died in Austria in recent days. A 51-year-old man was killed while kayaking in Tyrol, a 73-year-old fellow countryman was killed in the Alps. Local media report that.

The first accident happened on Wednesday afternoon in the Stubai Alps, a mountain range southwest of Innsbruck. A 71-year-old Belgian dropped his camera there during a hike with his wife. To get back to it, they descended along a path. The man left that to move further into the steep terrain, where he slipped and, according to the police, fell very deep.

The woman, two years older than her husband, did not dare to search for her husband in the dangerous area. Only after an hour, when a group of hikers passed by, could the rescue operation begin. The man’s body was found 150 meters below.

Second fatal accident

On Thursday evening, three Belgian tourists – 51, 33 and 27 years old – went kayaking on the Ötz around 6:30 PM. According to the local police, they did this without a guide or escort. The strong current capsized the eldest of the three, landed his head under water and was dragged out of the boat.

His body was carried away several kilometers by the strong current and was found there after a search by helicopter. He was taken out of the water and resuscitated, but he died of his injuries in the hospital in Innsbruck.
