While more details of the accident are still pending, the incident occurred near the summit of Tacul, at 4,248 metres, between the Aiguille du Midi and Mont-Maudit, an area exposed to falls due to large blocks of ice. Although the specific reasons for the accident are not known, it is a complicated area and a landslide could have occurred, impacting the group and sending the deceased mountaineers into the void.
The accident occurred at around 1.15pm this afternoon when a group of climbers fell from the summit of Mont Blanc while on the north face of the Gervasutti couloir. The two climbers who died, along with a third who was slightly injured, were following the normal route.
The bodies of the climbers have been transported to Chamonix and a Dragon 74 helicopter, the Chamonix Haute-Montagne gendarmerie section and a doctor have been dispatched to the scene. Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have informed Europa Press that the Spanish Consulate General in Lyon is aware of the accident and has spoken with the French authorities and the families of the victims to offer them the necessary consular assistance.
The mayors of the Guipuzcoan towns of Lezo and Oiartzun, Mikel Arruti and Joana Mendiburu, respectively, have expressed their sorrow at the death of the two young mountaineers. Through social networks, Mendiburu has expressed her shock at this news, which leaves Oiartzun “with a heavy heart”. On behalf of the municipal government team, she has conveyed her “deepest condolences” to the family and friends of the deceased young people. For his part, the mayor of Lezo has also regretted this “terrible news” and has conveyed his “condolences” to the friends and relatives of the two deceased.
