Two attempts at scams via WhatsApp | free press

Ellefeld/Neumark.

The police reported two cases of fraud via WhatsApp for Thursday from Vogtland. At noon, a 72-year-old woman from Neumark received a message via WhatsApp – allegedly from her daughter. The message stated that her cell phone was broken and that she was contacting her mother from a new number because of this. She needed money and asked her mother to transfer it via real-time bank transfer. The mother complied with this request and transferred a four-digit amount. After a phone call, the fraud became known and the 72-year-old informed the police. A 71-year-old man from Ellefeld, who was asked the same demands, reacted with quick-wittedness. He refused payment and informed his family and the police. In this context, the police point out that those affected do not enter into any transactions that they are asked to do via messenger. They should also inform the police and relatives after an attempt to contact them. (lh)
