Two Army Soldiers Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Drug Trafficking in Jakarta

Two persons army soldierSertu Yalpin Tarzun and Private Private Rian Hermawan, who were arrested for carrying 75 kg of methamphetamine and 40 thousand ecstasy, were sentenced to life imprisonment. The Medan Military Court judge’s decision was lower than the prosecution’s demand that they be sentenced to death.

Reported detikSumatra, the sentencing hearing against Sertu Yalpin and Private Rian was held this afternoon until this evening, Monday (29/5/2023). The panel of judges decided not to agree with the military prosecutors so that the two defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment.

In deciding this case, there was a dissenting opinion or difference of opinion between the three panels of judges who tried the case.



Chairman of the panel Colonel Chk Asril Siagian agreed with the death sentence demanded by the prosecutor, but two other member judges disagreed and chose to impose life sentences on the two defendants.

“Sentenced the two defendants Sertu Yalpin Tarzun and Private Private Rian Hermawan with the principal sentence of life imprisonment,” Colonel Chk Asril Siagian said in reading out his verdict.

Apart from life imprisonment, Sergeant Yalpin Tarzun and Private Private Rian Hermawan were given additional sentences in the form of dismissal from members of the Indonesian Army.

In the judge’s decision, the two defendants were found guilty and violated Article 114 paragraph (1) Jmo paragraph (2) RI Law No. 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
