Two Argentines will be the ambassadors of Monterrey in the Club World Cup

Mexican soccer is plagued by Argentines. For economic and football reasons, many decide to continue their career there since it represents a quality leap in their standard of living. In fact, this season there are 45 players that are distributed in 16 of the 18 teams of the highest category. And it could even be said that they usually give their teams a leap in quality and, many of them, even impose themselves as leaders. Such were the cases of César Delgado and Nicolás Sánchez in Monterrey. Both, at different times, shone in their positions, marked an era and even wore the captain’s ribbon. Now, away from professional activity, the club chose them to be the ambassadors in the Club World Cup, which will take place from February 03 to 12 in the United Arab Emirates.

As is often the case, the Concachampions champion enters the competition in the second round. In this case, the Rayados will face the always difficult Al-Ahly, an Egyptian team that forms the base of that country’s national team, next Saturday, February 5. And in the official boxes of the stands will be the two Argentine emblems. “I am grateful to the club for trusting me with this task. It really took me by surprise because I didn’t expect our paths to reconnect so quickly. It makes me very proud to know that I left that memory and that people have decided that I should occupy that place on the trip means that they have confidence in me”, commented the central defender, who hung up his boots at the end of 2021 after his brief stint at Godoy Cruz , in the program Los Rayados before the world.

Sánchez was present in the team that won the 2019 Concachampions and played in the Qatar Club World Cup against Klopp's Liverpool.

In addition, Sánchez stated: “If you allow me, I’ll leave in the middle of the fans (laughs). I am looking forward to living this from the place that touches me and what the club has planned with me for the fans. Honestly, I’m excited for what’s to come.” The former defender spent four and a half years at Rayados and during his stay he won four titles and scored 42 goals, a record figure in the institution for someone in his position.

On the other hand, Delgado is the third highest scorer in Club World Cup history with five goals in six games played. Retired some time ago, Chelito arrived in Monterrey in January-July 2011 and stayed until January 2015, when he decided to return to his beloved Rosario Central. There, he converted 27 goals and distributed 31 assists in 132 games. In addition, he won the Concachampions twice (2011/2012 and 2012/2013).
