Two American scientists won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine

Covid-19 , which was crucial in slowing the spread of the epidemic.

The Medicine Award has been presented 114 times to a total of 227 laureates.

Only 13 women have received the award, which has a cash value of 11 million Swedish krona ($1 million) from the legacy of the award’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.

Winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in the last ten years

  • 2024: Victor Ambros and Gary Rafkin (USA) announced the discovery of microRNA, a new class of small DNA molecules that play a vital role in regulating gene activity.
  • 2023: Katalin Karikó (Hungary) and Drew Weissman (United States) for their discovery of an mRNA vaccine that paved the way for COVID-19 vaccines.
  • 2022: Svante Pääbo (Sweden) for his role in determining the complete sequence of the Neanderthal genome and in establishing this specialty, which tries, by analyzing DNA from the fossils ancient times, to know the characteristics of human genes in ancient times.
  • 2021: David Julius and Arderem Patapoutian (USA) for their discovery of how the nervous system transmits signals related to temperature and touch.
  • 2020: Harvey Alter, Charles Rice (United States) and Michael Houghton (Britain) for their work in discovering the virus responsible for hepatitis C.
  • 2019: William Kaelin and Greg Semenza (United States) and Peter Ratcliffe (Britain) for their discovery of molecular mechanisms responsible for the adaptation of cells to variable oxygen levels in the body, which opened therapeutic horizons for cancer and anemia.
  • 2018: James B. Allison (United States) and Tasaku Honjo (Japan) for their research on immunotherapy, which has been particularly effective in treating deadly cancers.
  • 2017: Jeffrey S. Hall, Michael Rosbach, and Michael W. Yang (United States) for their discovery of molecular mechanisms regulating circadian rhythms.
  • 2016: Yoshinori Ohsumi (Japan) for his research on autophagy in damaged cells.
  • 2015: William Campbell (Ireland), Satoshi Omura (Japan) and Yuyou Tu (China) for discovering treatments against parasitic diseases and malaria.

Winners are invited to receive their awards at ceremonies to be held on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.

Nobel announcements continue with the physics prize being announced on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the Economics Prize on October 14.

The prize committee said in a statement, “This year’s Nobel Prize is awarded to two scientists for discovering a fundamental principle that governs the regulation of gene activity,” saying, “Their groundbreaking discovery revealed an entirely new principle of gene regulation that is essential for many organisms, including humans.”

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded last year to Hungarian-American Katalin Carrico and American Drew Weissman for their discoveries that helped to make messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines against Covid-19, which was crucial in slowing the spread of the epidemic.
