Air bomb alarm in Hanover: tens of thousands of people had to evacuate their homes. A road and tracks are damaged by blasts.

Update, Monday, March 6, 5:52 a.m.: Three aerial bombs from the Second World War were rendered harmless in Laatzen near Hanover. A bomb weighing 500 kilograms was defused on Sunday evening, as the city administration announced. Two other bombs, each weighing a ton, could not be defused and were detonated.

One of these bombs was on federal highway 443. According to the police, the road was damaged when it was blown up. The extent was initially unclear. Another bomb was under the tracks of Stadtbahn line 1. The line was badly damaged when it was blown up, as the Üstra transport company announced via Twitter. The repair will take a few days. Until then, the trains would have to take a detour.

The evacuation began at 7 a.m. on Sunday. Around 20,000 people had to leave their homes and apartments. They were allowed to return on Monday night, as the city administration announced via Twitter. Because the evacuation lasted into the night, parents of elementary school children should decide for themselves whether to go to school on Monday.
