The e-merchant had originally planned to shut down its distribution centers until Monday inclusive. Management has decided to extend the suspension of activity until April 22.

The war between Amazon and the government (notably the judiciary) continues to rage. After learning, Tuesday, April 14, of the decision of the judicial court of Nanterre obliging, under penalty of one million euros per day, the e-merchant to temporarily suspend activity in its distribution centers in France, on Coronavirus background, the American firm applied the judgment by announcing, the next day, the temporary cessation of its French warehouses until Monday, April 20. But on Sunday, Amazon has already declared that it will extend the suspension of activity until Wednesday, April 22, inclusive.

Amazon did not procrastinate for stopping its warehouses

Because we are no longer near a twist, by Wednesday, there could be something new in the “Amazon file.” The French subsidiary of the company hopes to obtain, on Tuesday, the lifting of the limitation of its activities to so-called essential products, and thus to reopen its sites in the coming days.

The e-merchant has in any case announced this weekend to extend the closure of its French warehouses by two additional days, until Wednesday April 22. “We remain perplexed as to the decision rendered by the court, despite the concrete evidence provided on the security measures that we have implemented, and appeal this decision”, the company declared on April 15.

Amazon still recalls maintaining the delivery of products sold by “Thousands of independent companies that sell on Amazon.fr, without category restriction. “ It is also possible to be delivered from foreign e-merchant platforms.

Amazon always pays its employees in full … who have launched a petition

For the moment therefore, the 10,000 employees and temporary workers in the six French distribution centers of Amazon are invited to stay at home. A meeting with the Social and Economic Committee (CSA) will take place this Monday. And in the meantime, the French employees of the company will still be paid 100%. Amazon sends a strong signal to the government by refusing to tip its workers into short-time working.

Amazon seems to gain little from the battle of opinion, with many customers who support the firm and do not understand that its French competitors, among which Fnac-Darty and Cdiscount, can keep a certain activity. A petition put online by employees of the Amazon site in Lauwin-Planque (North) a few days ago on the MesOpinions site has already collected 14,500 signatures. This tends to show the employees’ disagreement with the decision pronounced by the Nanterre court, “Which weighs on our customers and our jobs. This is why we ask you to sign this petition ”, conclude the employees.
