The microblogging site, launched in 2006, was also updated to allow 4K images.
This May 5, Twitter decided to allow users to have an – almost – full view of vertical photos. Tweeters quickly filled the platform with full-length photos of their favorite artists, athletes and characters, or simply giraffes and other elongated creatures that were previously victims of an unfortunate cutout.
Now when someone uploads a photo with their iOS or Android device, you can preview before posting and make sure the important part of the image will appear in its entirety on your timeline. This is not reflected, at the moment, in the desktop application.
One of the many to celebrate the change was the popular site Fandom, which celebrated with a photo of Groot (Guardians of the galaxy). You have to press to see the edges of the photo, but the face is there, which is the important thing.
Adrián Raya, from The Spanish, explains that the previous format was a big hassle when it came to following photographer or artist accounts. Twitter used an algorithm to crop and center the images, so as not to take up too much space in the timeline.
“But today, when most people use Twitter on vertical screens like mobile phones, it’s not that big of a problem, ”wrote Raya. “With the change, Twitter finally becomes an acceptable way to share photos and art”.
Of course, not only the artists celebrated.
