Since businessman Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, users have made a large-scale switch to Mastodon, a Twitter-like service. Since Twitter now announces that linking to an account on another platform is no longer allowed, users can no longer inform their Twitter followers of their new account.
“We have realized that many users are active on other social media platforms. We will no longer allow free advertising for certain social media platforms on Twitter,” the statement read. Chirping.
Penalties for violating the rules include deleting tweets up to and including complete account suspension. Also, in their Twitter bio, users are no longer allowed to mention their username on other platforms.
Under the new policy, Twitter focuses on only a few specifically named platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Post, and Nostr. There’s no telling what happens if you, as a Twitter user, refer to an account on another platform.
