On Friday June 4, 2021, the Nigerian government announced the suspension of the Twitter microblogging network reported by Rfi and Agence France Presse.
Muhammadu Buhari
The social network Twitter is suspended by the Nigerian government for an indefinite period. The information was relayed by the Nigerian media Ait and Seu Okin Channel TV on Twitter on Friday June 4, 2021. This decision by the Nigerian government to indefinitely suspend the Twitter operations in the country follows the deletion of a tweet from President Buhari from the social network. On Wednesday June 3, 2021, the Nigerian president made remarks in reference to the Biafran war.
Between 1967 and 1970 Nigeria was rocked by a civil war in southeastern Biafra, an oil-producing region. On May 30, 1967, Colonel Ojukwu announced the secession and the proclamation of sovereignty of this eastern part of Nigeria. This proclamation accentuated by the quest for control over the oil-producing region of Biafra constitutes the casus belli for the Nigerian civil war which has claimed the deaths of more than a million Nigerians.
“Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who have been through the war, will treat them in the language they understand. Said Buhari’s deleted tweet from Reuters. The Nigerian President responded to the various attacks on government buildings by threatening Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Banned of Biafra.
For the social network twitter, these words of President Buhari violated his “policy of abusive behavior”. The tweet was therefore deleted and the president’s account suspended for 72 hours. The Nigerian government’s response was not long in coming. If for Twitter the president’s comments violate his policies, it is not the opinion of Information Minister Lai Mohammed who says the president is free to hold such opinions, Reuters reported.
