San Francisco (AFP) – The social network Twitter announced on Thursday that it had eliminated about 3,500 accounts that carried out influence and propaganda operations for the benefit of governments of different countries.
The vast majority of these publications (2,048) relayed the official speech of the Communist Party of China on the treatment of the Uyghur people, a Muslim minority of which about a million members are believed to be held in forced labor camps, according to NGOs.
Another 100 accounts were linked to a company close to the government of the Chinese province of Xinjiang (northwest China), where most of the Uighurs live.
Likewise, other deleted accounts promoted the action of the authorities of Mexico, Russia, Tanzania, Uganda and Venezuela.
On the other hand, Twitter announced the launch, in early 2022, of a panel on moderation issues for its platform, which will bring together academics, NGO representatives, journalists and members of civil society.
The social network clarified that it will not exercise any control over the research topics or the conclusions of this group of experts.
On Wednesday, social media giant Facebook reported that it had dismantled an operation orchestrated from China, which used fake accounts to fuel tensions with the United States.
