Twitter, right to defame

Every morning when we wake up we feel an impulse that pushes us to look at social networks in search of messages from family, friends or colleagues to know how they are, respond to good health wishes and read news.

In these times of isolation due to the pandemic, it is wonderful to communicate through the internet connection of your mobile phone to send free messages or connect by video.

However, there are social networks such as Twitter that have been invaded and manipulated by politicians of all stripes to project their image in official accounts and attack their rivals in anonymous accounts through trolls.

In an unprecedented move, Donald Trump’s account was permanently suspended by the company citing incitement to violence, after he encouraged his followers to take over the Capitol.

Some criticized the measure as an attack on freedom of expression. In my opinion, no one has the right to lie or incite hatred.

According to Wikipedia, the so-called troll (from Norwegian troll, deformed goblins) describes a person with unknown identity who posts provocative or irrelevant messages in an online community with the main intention of annoying or provoking a negative emotional response in users and readers, for political or amusement purposes so that they users face each other.

The troll can spread rudeness, offenses, lies difficult to detect with impunity, with the intention of confusing and causing mixed feelings in others.

In these cases, it is best to ignore or block them, but never respond because the only thing that is achieved is to multiply the spread of lies.

On the other hand, if someone decides to report the spread of insults to the company, Twitter will first send a macho response: “We appreciate that you have informed us about this situation.”

Then the bluebird company will send another automatic text:

“We are writing to inform you that, after reviewing the available information, we do not consider that the content you reported violates our rules.

“We appreciate that you have told us what happened and we ask that you contact us again in the future if you see any possible breaches.”

It turns out that defamation is not in the Twitter rules and therefore they protect the anonymous defamer and leave the defamed person defenseless (identified by first and last name), without any protection.

That is why the Twitter company, to a large extent, has become a network of impunity for cowards and profits from the tolerated practice of anonymous attack.

Like Poncio Pilatos, Twitter washes its hands after counting income of more than 3.46 billion dollars (2019) while millions of users swarm with false names.

Mental health therapist Scott Carter accuses social media of being a sickly sociopathic desert, like stepping into a pool of filth.

Happiness, he adds, is inside oneself, not in the networks, the treasure of life that sociopathic digital platforms steal from us.
