Twitter relaxes its ban on advertising on political content

Twitter boss Elon Musk is changing political advertising guidelines that have been in place since 2019. Critics warn the platform could become a stage for hate speech, misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Twitter is relaxing its policy on political advertising. The US short message service will review its policy for “advertising about social issues” in the US and “align it with that of television and other media,” the company said under new owner Elon Musk.

Twitter banned political advertising in 2019 after the social media company and other services like Facebook were criticized for not comprehensively addressing election misinformation. The company has therefore also limited ads related to social causes.

Advertisers have been fleeing Twitter since Musk took over in late October. They expressed concern about Musk’s plans to relax content moderation rules in the name of freedom of expression. Critics warn that the platform could become a stage for hate speech, disinformation and conspiracy theories.
