Twitter owner Elon Musk wants to get rid of Twitter’s current logo. The bird turns into the letter X. “Soon we say goodbye to the Twitter brand,” Musk writes his account.
The new X logo has been on the walls of Twitter’s headquarters since Monday morning projected. That showed Twitter director Linda Yaccarino. Later, Twitter’s logo on the site and app must also change. The official Twitter account is now called X.
Musk has always had a thing for the letter X. The letter has been returning to companies where Musk works for more than twenty years. For example, X.com was the first name for payment service PayPal, which was founded by Musk. In addition, Musk introduced the Model X at Tesla and his space company is called SpaceX. Even Musk’s son is named X.
That he wanted to change Twitter to X is also no surprise. After purchasing the social network, Musk already announced that he planned to build X. According to him, “an app for everything”. Rumors are that he wants to make a Western alternative to the Chinese WeChat. This is basically a chat app, but it is used (daily by more than a billion Chinese) for much more.
With WeChat, users can, for example, shop online, read news, take out a loan, order food and order a taxi. Different types of apps are linked to WeChat and together form a ‘super app’.
The app for everything
Since Sunday, the website X.com has been leading to Twitter. Yaccarino already tried to explain what the brand change should bring about. “Twitter made a huge impact on the way we communicate,” she writes. “X goes even further.”
X, she says, should be about “unlimited interactivity,” whether it’s audio, video, messaging, or payments. “It will become a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services and opportunities,” she says. Artificial intelligence should also play a role. It is not known exactly what the new app should look like.
Chaos at Twitter
The brand change is the latest adjustment since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Until now, most of the changes have not been appreciated. The blue check mark used to verify the identity of an account is now a sign that someone is paying for a Twitter subscription.
Because advertisers are dropping out, Musk is trying to make money in other ways. For example, people have to pay to be able to send more private messages. In recent months, the service has also regularly suffered from malfunctions.
