Twitter is going to limit the number of messages users can view. Paid users will be able to view a maximum of 6,000 posts per day. For non-paying users, Twitter sets the limit at 600 messages. New free accounts can only read 300 posts.
According to Musk, the intervention is necessary “to prevent extreme amounts of data scraping (massive automatic data collection, ed.) And system manipulation” that would slow down the system. For that reason, Twitter had already made it impossible for people without an account to read messages on Friday. That measure would be “temporary”, according to the eccentric billionaire.
Many Twitter users reported outages on the platform on Saturday. For example, several users get the message: “Sorry, but your account is limited. Please wait a moment and then try again.” Whether this has to do with the changes to the site, or simply means that users have already reached their daily limit, is not immediately clear.
Until now, Twitter has relied on the accessibility of tweets to attract new users, for example by people who send interesting tweets to unregistered friends. Since Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, took over Twitter, he’s made several major changes, including the paid Twitter Blue subscription.
