(Reuters) – Twitter will lift a ban on political advertising it enacted in 2019, an executive at the American social network confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday, as the company now owned by entrepreneur Elon Musk is looking to boost its revenue.
Through the platform, Twitter announced on Tuesday the revision of its regulation on political advertising in the United States, to adopt a framework similar to that of television and other American news outlets.
The decision also brings Twitter closer to other digital giants, Meta Group’s Facebook and Alphabet Group’s YouTube, which allow for political ads. TikTok is the only social network that still bans them.
Twitter decided to ban political ads in 2019 after, like other platforms, it faced widespread criticism for what it saw as inaction on disinformation.
