San Francisco / Cologne (pte004 / 01/28/2021 / 06:15) – US microblogging service Twitter will soon provide researchers with tools to help them analyze the latest possible tweets. By applying, scientists will verify themselves on the platform and thus gain access to content that is at least one week old. This allows them to research certain topics such as misinformation or the corona pandemic.
“Data different from Facebook”
“All social media platforms are currently struggling with problems such as fake news or hate speech. It is in Twitter’s interest that these topics be researched. This allows the company to take better measures and prevent government intervention. Twitter is for science Very exciting, many use the app as a means of communication. Because the content is mostly public and also posted by reputable institutions, the data is significantly different than, for example, on Facebook, “says social media expert Felix Beilharz http://felixbeilharz.de in a press release.
To qualify for the data tools, researchers must have a degree or work for a scientific institution. They must also have a clearly defined research goal and not use their analysis for commercial purposes. According to Twitter, the most important data are data about the coronavirus, the spread of fake news and cyberbullying.
Excluding blocked accounts
Twitter gives the verified experts access to tweets that are at least a week old. For reasons of data protection law, this does not apply to the content of blocked accounts. This currently also includes tweets from ex-US President Donald Trump. Researchers also have to delete content if it is no longer publicly visible.
