Twitter does not have to expect a blockade in Russia for the time being

MOSCOW (dpa-AFX) – The short message service Twitter is no longer threatened with a blockade in Russia for the time being. The Roskomnadzor media supervisory authority decided on Monday. She threatened to take this step if the US company did not remove prohibited content such as child pornography by mid-May. This has happened to 91 percent so far. Twitter was supposed to delete 4,100 posts that contained appeals for suicide against minors. According to the information, the short message service is still to remain throttled on cell phones.

Critics see the procedure as an attempt to restrict the right to freedom of expression on the Internet. A law has been in force in Russia for a few weeks which obliges operators of social networks to search for prohibited information and to delete it. This also includes calls for unauthorized protests. Following demonstrations for the imprisoned Kremlin opponent Alexej Navalny, Twitter was recently sentenced to a heavy fine. This also affected Facebook and Youtube./cht/DP/fba
