Jan. 14 (Reuters) – TWTR.N Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said on Wednesday that banning US President Donald Trump’s account after the violence in Washington last week was the “right move,” but added it was was a dangerous precedent.

“Having to take these measures fragments the public debate,” he wrote on the social network. “It divides us. It limits the possibility of clarification, redemption and learning. And it sets a precedent that I fear is dangerous: the power that an individual or business has over part of the global public debate. “.

Some of Donald Trump’s Republican peers have criticized Twitter’s decision, denouncing a crackdown on his free speech. In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said through a spokesperson that it was up to lawmakers, not private companies, to decide on possible limits to freedom of expression.

In the series of messages he posted on Twitter, Jack Dorsey said he took no satisfaction from the ban on Donald Trump from the platform.

He added that such a move ultimately constituted Twitter’s “failure” to promote “healthy conversation.”
