Twitter Brings Closed Captions for Voice Tweets to iOS After Accessibility Issues

Following comments from accessibility advocates, Indonesia have now added a caption to their voice tweet. The feature has currently been introduced for iOS users only, as voice tweets have not yet reached Android. This text will be automatically generated in one of eleven supported languages including English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, French, Indonesian, Korean and Italian.

To view the text of the voice tweet, the user has to tap on the CC icon in the upper right corner Tweeter window. Subtitles will only be created for new tweets, meaning old tweets will not benefit from this feature.

At the time of the launch of the voice tweet, it was revealed that Twitter did not have a dedicated accessibility team at the time. Back then, employees had to devote their time to accessibility work. The company has fixed this shortcoming, with a dedicated accessibility team formed within the company in September last year.

“As part of our ongoing work to make Twitter accessible to everyone, we are deploying automated text to voice tweets on iOS,” Twitter global accessibility manager Gurpreet Kaur said in a statement.

“While this is still early days and we knew it wouldn’t be perfect from the start, this is one of many steps we are taking to expand and strengthen the accessibility of our services, and we look forward to continuing. a truly inclusive service,” he added.

Twitter also offers subtitles on Twitter Spaces, its social audio space is similar to club house.

Earlier this week, Twitter announced that it would be turning off an old feature, Fleets. These are similar to stories on Facebook and Instagram that appear above the Twitter apps for Android and iOS and are 24 hours long. Less than a year after its launch, Twitter said it believed Fleet had no future and announced the feature on August 3, 2021.
