Twitter Blue: Twitter subscription now also in the USA

Five months after its launch, Twitter is also launching its paid offer in the important US market. It was first introduced in Australia and Canada in June. Now, in addition to the USA, it is also coming to New Zealand, as Twitter announced on Tuesday. There is still no information about a date for Europe.

The payment offer with the name Twitter Blue brings some functions only for subscription customers. Among other things, you can edit finished tweets for up to 30 seconds. Tweet series are also displayed more legibly and there is the option of better organizing saved tweets in “bookmark” folders. The subscription costs $ 2.99 per month in the US.

Twitter mainly makes its money from advertising. In practice, this means that advertisers can bring their tweets into the timelines of users as advertisements, even if they don’t follow their accounts. Twitter had been thinking about additional income from a subscription model for a long time.

With the short-term editing function, Twitter did not fulfill the wish of many users for the possibility of being able to change the posts afterwards. Advertising is also shown to subscribers in the Twitter app.

Of the last 211 million daily users that Twitter can reach with advertisements, 37 million come from the USA. In its home market, however, the short message service generated around 58 percent of its sales.
