“We know that many of our users are also active on other social media platforms. In the future, however, Twitter will no longer allow free advertising for certain social media platforms on Twitter,” the US online giant’s customer service said. The new rule applies to both tweets and your account bio. The ban applies to links to Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel and Nostr, among others.
“Accounts primarily used to promote content on another social platform may be suspended,” Twitter said. In general, the account can be permanently blocked in case of multiple violations.
Possible advertising against cash
So-called “cross-posting”, i.e. sharing the same post on different platforms, is still allowed. Paid advertising on the affected platforms is also permitted.
Twitter was acquired by tech multibillionaire Elon Musk for $44 billion in October, and he’s been pushing his ideas through the short message service ever since. In the past, Musk has always presented himself as a champion of free speech – he even got former US President Donald Trump’s long-banned Twitter account reactivated.
However, the blocking of the Twitter accounts of several top US journalists caused a stir last week. Even though most of their accounts have now been reactivated, the criticisms of the procedure have been enormous. Many users then advertised the Twitter competitor Mastodon as an alternative, but even earlier.
