What has German Twitter users been particularly concerned with in the Corona year 2020? The short message service has published its annual review.

This year, topics like the corona pandemic, the US elections and the Black Lives Matter movement have preoccupied the whole world. This is also reflected in Twitter’s annual review. According to the evaluation of the short message service, #corona was the most used hashtag among German users between January 1 and November 24, 2020. This is followed by the South Korean boy band BTS (“Dynamite”) with the hashtag #bts, a game console from Nintendo (#nintendoswitch), the video game “Animal Crossing: New Horizons (#animalcrossing) and Chancellor Angela Merkel (66, #merkel) in the top five.
Virologists and politicians with strong growth
The top ten Twitter users with the greatest growth in followers are largely personalities who play a role in the context of the pandemic. First place goes to virologist Christian Drosten (48), second place to SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach (57) and the three to science journalist and moderator Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim (33, “Funny, it’s all chemical!”), who published the most trending YouTube video of the year in Germany in April with her clip “Corona is just starting off”. Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (53) lands on fourth, YouTuber Unge (30) and PapaPlatte in fifth and sixth, Kevin Kühnert (31) from the SPD in seventh and Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (40) in eight. The virologists Alexander Kekulé (62) and Hendrik Streeck (43) complete the list.
In general, the following five personalities – in this order – were mentioned most frequently via the appropriate hashtags: Chancellor Merkel (#merkel), US President Donald Trump (74, #trump), BTS star Jungkook (23, #jungkook), Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (71, #seehofer) and NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (59, #laschet). The five hashtags most frequently used in Germany on movements are #blacklivesmatter, #stayathome, #fridaysforfuture, #wirhabenplatz and #leavenoonebehind.
