Twitter Adds Auto Caption Feature for Videos

Text can be useful in new vertical feeds Twitter which the company began testing last week. If the feed is launched publicly, it will create an Explore tab resembling TikTok serving one algorithmically recommended piece of content at a time, including videos.

In feeds like this, video with captions is to be expected as it makes it easy to scroll through the feed when the user is in a public place and not carrying headphone. Unlike the video captions feature on TikTok and Reels, Twitter won’t let users change the captions. This means the user will not be able to correct any errors to make the auto text more accurate.

Accessibility features such as auto captions and image alt captions have been getting more attention from Twitter after it created a dedicated accessibility team in September 2020. The staff change was prompted after users criticized Twitter last summer for testing out the auto-caption-free tweet feature. Now, Twitter’s Twitter Clubhouse rival Spaces and Twitter have captions.

While Twitter’s support for captions on video is still new, the company is already using captioning technology in live audio chat rooms called Twitter Spaces. The company notes they retain a copy of Space’s audio, including text, for 30 days to review content for violations of Twitter’s guidelines.

If Space is found to contain a violation, Twitter will retain this record for an additional 90 days to offer speakers the opportunity to appeal their violation. Unfortunately for Twitter and users, this process doesn’t go far enough to address abuse issues on its platform. Twitter Spaces users have been treated to extremely harmful content including Spaces with racially charged titles that remain on feed them even after being reported.

Reported Tech Crunch, Wednesday (15/12), Twitter community manager Simon Balmain recently responded to this problem. In a tweet, he said the company was working on the issue, but Twitter had not provided details about the development of Spaces’ audio and text storage and reporting features.
