Twitch’s monthly hours watched “rebounded” in September, says new report

Twitch Sees Monthly Viewership Surge in September: A Slow Recovery

Twitch, the popular live streaming platform, has reported a significant rebound in its monthly hours watched, reaching 1.653 billion in September 2024. This marks an increase from 1.568 billion in June and positions Twitch on a path to recovery following a mid-year slump. According to the latest State of the Stream summary by StreamElements, derived from Rainmaker.gg’s data, daily hours watched have also improved dramatically, rising from an average of 45 million to 55 million—the highest daily metrics since April.

A Shift on the Streaming Landscape

Despite still falling short of the record 1.902 billion hours watched in January 2024, the latest figures indicate a revitalization of viewer engagement. The September upswing can be attributed not only to the sheer volume of watching but also to specific gaming titles capturing the audience’s attention. EA Sports PC 25 has emerged as the second game of 2024 to penetrate the top ten most-viewed games on Twitch, following the earlier achievement of Palworld in January. Another heavy hitter, Dota 2, experienced a massive 78% increase in viewership driven by the competitive championship known as The International.

Or Perry, CEO of StreamElements, explained the noteworthy changes: "Twitch experienced two significant highlights in September that fueled each other: a rise in daily hours watched and a reshuffling of its top streamer rankings."

The FaZe Clan Effect

A notable factor in Twitch’s viewership resurgence is the simultaneous subathons organized by members of the FaZe Clan. Each session lasted over 695 hours and helped propel four creators into the platform’s top ten for the first time. Among these creators was Stableronaldo, who emerged as the leading figure. With a peak share of hours watched by the top 100 streamers rising to 20%, up from the usual 17%, the collaborative streaming endeavours proved beneficial for participants.

Perry also highlighted the importance of collaborative features, such as Stream Together, which streamlined the process of co-streaming among FaZe Clan members. By joining forces, these streamers not only amplified their reach but also engaged viewers in a more interactive and entertaining format.

The Future of Twitch and Its Impact

The resurgence in viewership is essential for Twitch as it navigates a challenging landscape where competition in the live streaming arena continues to intensify. With platforms like YouTube Gaming and Facebook Gaming constantly enhancing their offerings, maintaining a strong viewer base is paramount.

The impact of increased viewership extends beyond just numbers; it also plays a crucial role in attracting sponsors and advertisers who are eager to capitalize on the platform’s high engagement levels. As Twitch continues to innovate with features that enhance user experience, its ability to retain and attract both streamers and viewers will remain a focal point.

Industry Implications

The rise in Twitch’s viewership not only signifies a victory for the company but also serves as an indicator of the greater trends within the streaming industry. As gaming becomes increasingly intertwined with community and social connection, the manner in which streamers engage with their audiences will inevitably shape the businesses that rely on these platforms.

Given these trends, both technology enthusiasts and industry professionals should observe how Twitch adapts to competition and market demands in the coming months.
