Twitch will cease operations in Korea as of February 27, 2024

CEO Twitch Dan Clancy announcedthat the site will wind down its activities in Korea from February 27, 2024.

The reason for this decision is simple – managers spend large resources on maintaining Twitch in the country, but the platform still generates losses in the local market.

Clancy noted that the authors tried different solutions to the problem, such as focusing on the peer-to-peer model to preserve the quality of the source. The team then decided to set the maximum image quality level to 720p. However, the fee for using the network in Korea was still 10 times higher than in a number of other countries.

The executive noted that Twitch will provide “active support” to local streamers who have spent a lot of time building their communities with the platform. Those same communities will be migrated to alternative Korean live streaming services.

Clancy added that the decision was difficult and bitter for the company, but there was no other way out of the situation. At the same time, he thanked all the streamers who helped develop Twitch in Korea.

In November, Twitch executives, by the way, announced that they would close their application on Nintendo Switch in January 2024.
